Overview: This lesson covers the future implications of evolution: artificial selection, cloning, genetic engineering. The students will explore the future possibilities of human evolution by utilizing their knowledge of evolution to create a creative representation of what we may someday look like.
Opening: To begin the lesson the students will have a prompt written on the board “what do you think the human race will look like in the year 7000?” we will then discuss what the students came up with.
-Will humans look the same?
-Will we still be here?
-What environmental pressures will we have to deal with?
We will then go through a powerpoint on artificial selection, genetic engineering, etc. it will open the students minds to the future of evolution.
Activities: The main activity of this class will be a creative drawing of what humanity would look like in the future if they had colonized a different planet. The students must write an explanation of why they drew humanity like they did. The students must include accurate information they had learned during the unit such as genetic engineering, combination with technology, environmental pressures etc.
Closing: To finish this exploratory class we will have a review session for the test next class. I will go over each powerpoint quickly and have an open question period. Then I will have some time in class for the students to make flashcards that I will provide.
Assessment Notes: The students will be assessed for the practicality of their drawings. It will count as a homework grade because it is a creative project and will be informal.
